Here is an easy way to get your home’s hardwood or laminate floors clean naturally. No need to use toxic cleaners! I get my floors clean fast and they are always ready and safe for my toddler to play on.
What you need:
- Soft broom & dustpan
- Mop
- Bucket
- Lemon juice (Use the juice of half a lemon)
- Half a cup of white vinegar
- Warm water
Easy Steps:
- Sweep away dust and dirt from the floor with a soft broom
- Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water and half a cup of white vinegar
- Soak the mop in the mixture and wring out the mop to get rid of excess water. You want to ensure the mop is damp but NOT soaking wet. (To much water will damage hardwood/laminate and cause the wood to crack or splinter)
- Mop the floor side to side and up and down, work your way across the room
- Dump the dirty water and fill the bucket with 1 gallon of warm water and the lemon juice
- Mop the floor with the water and lemon juice solution
- Finish by rinsing the floor with warm water
- Floor should be damp (not too wet) and it should be left to air dry
There you have it! Super clean shiny floors with a fresh lemony scent.

It is! Love how shiny they are after! 🙂
Natural is the best. Thanks for this!
No problem 🙂
I have been looking for a good recipe—thanks. Any idea if it is ok to sit in my spray mop? I mop often with a cat and 2 kids so it is nice to have something always in the bottle good to do.
Tenille, I have water/vinegar solutions in spray bottles without an issue, but maybe try to keep the lemon juice separate 🙂
Thanks for the tip. I especially like the lemony fresh part. Gonna try this
Great idea! We just got hardwood floors and we’re still learning about the upkeep.
I have had the real hard wood floors in my house for 6 years now. I notice that you have to pay special attention to them if you want them to stay looking good. I normally use a polish and some bleach on them but I think I am gonna try out your solution and see if I notice a difference. Thank you for sharing.
I chore made simpler and economical thanks
I did this and my hardwood floors turned out sooooo nice!!! Thanks so much for posting this!!
Hello, OSM. I like that you explained each step and mentioned how to properly mop a floor. This is another easy tip that uses natural ingredients which make me feel better when cleaning my house. Thank you for another great post, One Smiley Monkey.
I am trying so hard to learn how to clean naturally. Personally I love the smell of vinegar, and who doesn’t love the smell of lemons! I have to mop my floors every few days, so this is a life saver!
Thank you so much! Our entire house is hardwood, and it is so hard to keep clean! I will be trying this:)

I’m not that much of a internet reader to
be honest but your blogs really nice, keep it up!

September 12-I love your tip for cleaning Hardwood and Laminate floors. I plan to follow it to the letter. Your floor looks beauruful. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing how to clean laminate without using any chemicals. I like to keep the floors clean, but with little ones around, they always seem to drop their food on the floor and immediately pick it up and put it in their mouth. I wanted to clean the floor without using any chemicals. Thanks.
Vinegar is a chemical. It is acetic acid.
Just because it’s a “chemical” doesn’t make it dangerous!
Great way to clean floors and disinfect with ingredients you have around the house.
I also use a recipe and put in alcohol, vinegar, H202, Theives Oil and water. Leaves floors clean with not residue. Lemon seems like a good addition and maybe a drop of natural dish soap… just a little drop not too much.
love this! i will be trying it!
I just started using vinegar for cleaning and will definitely try this!

I’ve been looking for a recipe just like this. We put laminate in our master bath last year and I’m never sure what to clean it with. Love the natural ingredients!
Although I know vinegar is probably the best stuff out there for cleaning, I personally cannot stand it. Mostly for the smell, but the lemons probably help with that. I’ve always used a 50/50 mix of water and alcohol (rubbing alcohol), spray and wipe. It evaporates super quick without seeping into the wood.
I’ll be sure to send the link to my mom, she struggles to keep their hardwood floods clean. Thank you.
This sounds great. I hate chemical smells.
This sounds wonderful.I haven’t tried the lemon juice and so I’m hoping it leaves a nice shine on the floor. This is an awesome tip for my laminate floors. Thanks so much.
This is a good tip for cleaning hardwood floor. I will give this a try. I like it when our house smells nice.
Those are great tips for cleaning laminate floors naturally! Sometimes I think it’s hard to find ways to properly clean laminates without really destroying it and with 2 little kids, I want to keep our place as clean as possible without any chemicals.
Thanks for the great recipe for the hardwood cleaner. I will have to try this out on my own hardwood floors and see how it works for me.
Sweet blog! I found it while browsing on Yahoo News.
Do you have any tips on how to get listed in Yahoo News?
I’ve been trying for a while but I never seem to get there!
Many thanks
Sounds good, I am going to be tackling the upstairs floors today
Thanks I love vinegar for cleaning

to do so in a grand scale which means taking a hit where it counts:

Thanks for the great tip
The smell would be an added bonus to the clean floors!
We could easily do this, as we have all the ingredients on hand, but do you really mop the same floor 3 times? (vinegar/water, lemon/water, and then plain water?) Do you really need to do the last water rinse?
I love vinegar for my hardwood floors, nothing make them shine any better
Thanks for the tip recipe for the hardwood cleaner
In my last house I had wonderful old hardwood floors, they were beautiful. I wish I’d have known this cleaning trick then. I now have cork tiles and carpet only – ceramic tiles only in the bathroom. No wooden floors now 🙁
This sounds wonderful or putting that extra shine on the floors. Thanks so much for posting this.

My dad would like to have hardwood flooring installed in our kitchen area since this will suit its design. Well, I’m glad you shared this; I’ll make sure to inform him about the advantage of using lemon juice and white vinegar in cleaning the said flooring. Thank you for also clarifying here that the hardwood flooring must not be soaked with too much water.
Hmmm I never heard of this before. I was just looking into Swiffer, and yikes, the cost could really add up. My floors could use refinishing, but I’d like to try to keep them as good as possible, I want to give this a whirl!
This is such a great idea. Thanks for info and recipe for floors.
