The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children stay rear-facing until at least two years of age. Don’t rush to move your child to the forward-facing position. Because every child develops at a different rate, age is not the only factor to consider. As best practice, we recommend keeping your child rear-facing to the maximum weight or height of their car seat.

When harnessing a child you should not be able to pinch the harness strap at the collar bone.
All of the Diono 10 Car Safety Tips are extremely important, here’s #2:
2. Harnessing 101: Is your child properly harnessed? Whether rear-facing or forward-facing, the chest clip on your child’s harness should always be placed at armpit level. This ensures the harness stays on the child’s shoulders for maximum safety. The 5-point harness should fit snug and comfortable. You should not be able to pinch the harness strap at the collar bone.
Read that manual folks, everything you need to know is in there. Following the specific instructions for your car seat could mean the difference between life and death of your child in the event of a crash…its very important!

I have one of these for my middle child, and could use one for my youngest.
I like tip #9 about choosing the seatbelt or latch, particularly the part about checking whether or not your child has surpassed the weight limit for using the latch. We installed our car seat so long ago that I’d completely forgotten about there being a weight limit for the latch system, so it is a very timely reminder for me to check – I am pretty sure our child is at or near the limit now!
The best tip they gave is Read The Manual.
Tip #4 was a great reminder for me: Re-check the harness slot! I don’t remember the last time I checked this and my 5 year old has grown quite a bit taller in the past year. I will be checking this weekend for sure!

To always read the manual first to make sure to install it properly I saw on the news here that many people instal the car seats wrong and then the seats will not work right.

I believe in Harnessing 101. To see if your child properly harnessed do the pinch test as described in the tips- not the child the harness.

I think the best tip is to read the manual to ensure that the seat is properly installed.
I think “Re-check the harness slot” is one that many people forget so it has to be talked about more often.
My daughter is almost three I still have her rear facing because I know it’s safer. However I did not know the difference of rest verusus forward for the shoulder placement. Thanks for info !

I found the very first point is exactly what you should begin with. Read the manual: You should always read both the car seat manual AND your vehicle manual, as both contain vital information about installation, seat belt function, seating positions and safety warnings. Store your manuals in a safe spot (like your glove box or storage compartment) so you can reference them later as your child grows.

#3 Rear-facing is 5X safer! I’m surprised more don’t do this. I haven’t had any problems with keeping my little ones in their seats this way for longer.

I think tip #7 is easy to overlook – Always buckle. I think sometimes we can get lazy with this when we are minutes away from our destination.

I love the tip about rear facing! Extended rear facing is so important and I cringe when people turn their littles so soon! Don’t be in a rush to move your children in the car seat stages!

Not all carseats are the same so just because you installed 3 carseats it doesn’t mean the 4th is the same! Especially when you have had a kid out of the infant seat a few years and get a new one for the next baby, read the manual!

I have to admit the very first tip was referring to me. Read the dang manual. I have a bad habit that I think I would know how something works or needs to be put together that I often don’t read manuals until all else fails lol.
