“When we first shared the idea of manufacturing our footwear in Africa, many asked: Why? Why or how could anyone want to make shoes in a place full of so much poverty and corruption?
The answer is simple: We never have and still don’t see an Africa that’s categorised by negative generalizations. Oliberté believes that with the right partners, each country within Africa has the means to grow and support its people. So that’s what we do – Oliberté partners with factories, suppliers, farmers and workers to produce premium footwear in Africa, but we do more than that. We work to create fair jobs, with the goal of contributing to the development of a thriving middle class.
When we made the decision to work in Africa, we knew we would face some challenges, but we made sure to maintain our focus on ethical practices. When we started off, it meant that Oliberté ensured it partnered with suppliers and factories that demonstrated respect and equity in the work place for men and women. Then, in August of 2012, we were able to start our own factory in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
We carefully selected each of our partner factories based on our “play fair” factor, and we continue to play by this high bar. Women comprise approximately 60 percent of our factory employees, including manufacturing as well as administrative positions.

What I learned is that according to their website they are the “first ever footwear manufacturing factory to be Fair Trade Certified by Fair Trade USA”. Pretty awesome if I do say so myself.

I learned that nubuck is a more sturdy sanded leather, made of the outer side of the hide. It has shorter grains than suede and looks very smooth and buttery.

I learned about their shoe recycling program – if you don’t have a friend/family member/other to give your used shoes to, then they will arrange to have the shoes returned to them for free so that they don’t end up going to waste or ending up in garbage/landfills. very lovely policy and way of thinking. kudos!
