pitcher

My husband is a water snob. He prefers bottled water to tap water, but after nine years with me, he has resigned himself to the fact that I will not allow bottled water in my home. I grew up with good old-fashioned Toronto tap water and when home water filter pitchers became popular, I followed the masses and got one. I really didn’t like the taste of the water once it passed through the water filter and eventually ditched it in favour of my trusty tap water.

Once I had my son I became more interested in the health impacts of fluoride. Since we just moved back to Toronto where the water supply is fluorinated, it was the perfect time to try the Clearly Filtered water filtration system. The Pure Filtered Water Pitcher retails for $69.95 and eliminates 90% of fluoride, 99.99% of chlorine, as well as over 96% of Lead, Mercury and Chromium 6. (www.clearlyfiltered.com)

I was also pleased to see each filter replaces over 1,000 plastic water bottles, is 100% BPA-free, is recyclable and made in the U.S.A.

Of course, I had to make the water snob test the water in a blind taste test. I took a glass of Clearly Filtered water, a glass of regular tap water and a glass of water filtered through our fridge. He immediately disliked the tap water. He then couldn’t tell the difference between the two filtered waters and randomly picked the fridge water as the “best”. I think they all taste very similar, but knowing the Clearly Filtered water is free of almost any fluoride (amongst other things) I will be drinking that from now on.

Not everybody believes the research that indicates the negative health impacts of fluoride, but I am of the mind of, why take a chance? I already buy fluoride free toothpaste for myself and son. If another solution is as simple as buying a reasonably-priced home water filter, I am all for it. You can find more information on some of the potential risks of fluoride in our water supply here: http://www.naturalnews.com/030123_fluoride_babies.html.
