I loved playing Monopoly when I was a child. I tried to be strategic and buy all the expensive properties and then ran out of money and lost. A lot. Funny how it didn’t occur to me that this wasn’t the best strategy. Alas.

My son has a Junior version of Monopoly, but has been finding it less challenging as of late. We received the My Monopoly game and immediately I knew it would be a big hit. The game requires that you create an account at www.mymonopoly.com or the mymonopoly app, and upload photos, which are then printed onto stickers that are used on the board, game cards and game pieces. It really does make for a creative experience for your child to get to select which photos they want to use and where they should go. My son loved this part of the set up.

The game itself is quite similar to the classic Monopoly game with the object of trying to bankrupt your opponents through property ownership. I really enjoyed that my son had to do some basic math (counting the dice when he rolled) and was introduced to the idea of using money and getting change. I beat him easily (I know, he’s five, but a kid has just got to learn to lose sometimes!), yet we both had fun and are looking forward to playing again with family and friends. I think this really is a game that appeals to both adults and children of all ages.

The game is rated for ages 8 and up (but my five- year-old was able to play with help) and retails for approximately $19.95 USD, but can be found for less online. You will require a printer to create your stickers and personally I think a colour printer works much better than a black and white. This would make a great Christmas gift if you are the type to start stock piling in the fall as well.

Do you do family game night? Is there a favourite game that your children absolutely love?
