Our BC Hydro bill usually doubles during the winter months. I am one of those people who is always too cold and cranking the heat during the cold months can be tempting. However, I have made a conscious decision to reduce our energy use this winter and save some money at the same time. And thanks to BC Hydro online electricity tracking tools, keeping on top of our electricity use has been easy.
BC Hydro’s electricity tracking tools allow you to see your electricity use right down to the hour. You can even compare your electricity use with similar homes in your neighborhood, see your usage at the same period last year, and the average outside temperature. The tools also give you the opportunity to set up alerts and reminders, and you can also download your usage data for analysis.
How to use
Ready to start tracking your usage?
- Create an online MyHydro account at bchydro.com
- Select view detailed consumption to access the electricity tracking tools
- Be sure to check back monthly to see how you are doing.
Join the Team Power Smart
While you are logged into your account be sure to join Team Power Smart and start a Reduction Challenge. If you reduce your home’s electricity use by 10% in the next 12 months, you can earn a $50 reward. I joined the team this month, and I love having a special reward. I am looking forward to saving electricity and making some extra money.
For us, space heating accounts for a significant chunk of our electricity bill, so wearing warmer clothes, turning the thermostat down a couple of notches and switching to a programmable thermostat are all great ways to reduce consumption.
Do you find your electricity bill increases substantially during the winter? If you have a BC Hydro account, are you a member of Team Power Smart?
