Our BC Hydro electricity bills are often higher during the winter months. If you are like us, then you probably have to pay a lot more money during the winter as well. Are you thinking about reducing your usage and your bill at the same time? The following ten easy tips will help you save electricity and money!
- Turn off unnecessary lights: This is an easy one and one to start with, and we have been working on it at home with the boys. Anytime we leave a room we turn the lights off, simple.
- Manage your thermostat: If you have electric heat, lower your thermostat by two degrees to save 5% on your heating bill. Lowering it five degrees could save 10%. I am finding that just those couple of degrees make a big difference. Wearing a sweater or sitting on the couch with a blanket always help too so you don’t feel too cold!
- Try cooking with smaller appliances – Use the microwave, crock pot, or toaster oven: A microwave takes 15 minutes to do the same job for 1 hour in an oven. This is an easy one to try and something I should work on more when baking and cooking dinners.
- Wash laundry with cold water: I already wash our clothes with cold water only, I love that you can even buy cold water laundry soap. Switching to cold water is an easy way to save electricity!
- Wash dishes with full loads: We always run the dishwasher at the end of the day when it is full. Try to avoid doing small loads before the dishwasher is full.
- Use LED bulbs: Switching to LED bulbs can help you lower your consumption.
- Take shorter showers: Hot water is expensive. If two people in your home cut their shower time by a minute each, you could save $30 over a year. I love long showers, and I am working on taking shorter showers every day, I like the challenge and knowing that I will be saving money!
- Toss a towel in the dryer: Did you know that a dry towel added to your dryer load can significantly reduce drying times. If you’re doing seven loads a week, this could save you $27 a year.
- Turn water off when shaving, washing hands, brushing teeth: This is an easy one to teach little ones. I always make sure we turn the water off while shaving, washing hands and brushing teeth. Reduce your hot water usage by 5% to save about $21.
- Join the BC Hydro’s Team Power Smart and start a Reduction Challenge: If you reduce your home’s electricity use by 10% in the next 12 months, you can earn a $50 reward. I joined the team this month, and I love having a special reward. I am looking forward to saving electricity and making some extra money.

I follow some of these tips but not as consistently as I should. I wash laundry in cold water all the time. I have LED light bulbs which I love. Tips like these gives one incentive to do more.
I implement all of these tips and I keep my heating down to 18 C during the day and just warm up the room I’m in. In the evening the heating’s turned up to 20C for 2-3 hrs then back to 18 C. My toaster has a digital display and I unplug that every time I use it to avoid wasting electricity. I just wish that I was clever enough to turn off all the digital clocks that seem to be on every gadget & appliance these days,
These are great tips! We pretty much employ all the tips already and the savings really do add up.
I need to start doing laundry in cold water only. I have this idea in my head that cold water doesn’t wash as well.
So many great tips! thanks for sharing 🙂
I’m using many of these tips already, these are especially useful now that bchydro rates are increasing. Our hot water is from a gas heater tank so it wouldn’t save electricity, only gas which costs a lot.
Thanks for sharing these tips. I live in Ontario and our Hydro Bills are outrageous.
All great tips and I am happy to say we do them!
I am a PowerSmart member and they have great tips and prizes. Thanks for your tips here!
I follow a few of the tips in this article
We do most of these things and they really work!
Nice tips. I also would suggest to even switch off appliances from switchboard rather putting them in power saving mode. A common example is TV.
I’d heard of these tips but never realized the amount in dollars and cents! That’s pretty big for us the way we go through electricity here! Thank you!
I’m familiar with most of your tips to save electricity but the one that really caught my attention was to cook with small kitchen appliances when able rather than the oven. Thanks!
These are awesome tips thanks Bills can get very high
I did not know that tossing a dry towel in the dryer with wet clothes will reduce drying time. Thank you for that tip.
They are good reminders. We all try to save on electricity.
I’m doing 7 out of 10 of these. I had no idea about the dry towel in the dryer tip. Thanks!
Sometimes it is just changing ingrained habits and we can do it.
I notice the LED lights have made a big difference, also using the slow cooker instead of the big oven! These are good tips, our electricity in our area is very expensive b/c we are at the bottom of a long chain that brings it from a very long distance, so every savings is really helpful.
I like to take advantage of natural light during the day
Okay – I really had no idea that a dry towel added to your dryer load can significantly reduce drying times! That’s nifty
I am trying the dry towel hack – never knew this! great tips
We do some of these things. Thanks for sharing.
I have mainly changed to LED and it does make a great difference.
