September 18th-24th is Child Passenger Safety Week in the Canada, an annual event to raise awareness for car seat safety.
Why is car seat safety so important?
Here are the facts:
- Car crashes are a leading cause of death among children in Canada and the United States.
- Four out of five car seats are not properly installed.
- Car seats reduce the risk of injury by 71-82% and reduce the risk of death by 28% in comparison to seat belts alone.
When it comes to car seat safety, there is no such thing as “overprotective.” Car seats save lives!

I like the tip they give is read the manual as new parents it’s important to install carseat properly
Such an informative article! Our daughter is in the infant carrier car seat so there is a lot to learn for the convertible car seats. I found the harness slot placement especially helpful for when she is in the forward facing in the future.
Always read the manual that’ll let you know all you need to know before using. Thanks for the chance.
Read the manual, something we don’t like to do, but do important in this case.
Reading the manual is the most important step. As a CPST this is one of the biggest things I stress with my clients!!
Reading the manual is the first and most important step.
Definitely read the manual. So easy to miss something otherwise.
To always read the manual!
One of the ten safety tips they shared is: 3. Rear-facing is 5X safer: Rear-facing car seats offer maximum protection for your child’s head, neck and spinal cord, yet 77% of children are moved into a forward-facing seat too soon. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children stay rear-facing until at least two years of age. Don’t rush to move your child to the forward-facing position. Because every child develops at a different rate, age is not the only factor to consider. As best practice, we recommend keeping your child rear-facing to the maximum weight or height of their car seat.
Definitely read the manual no one ever does anymore.
Read the manual. This might not be a direct safety tip but an important one because it gives us vital information on how to use the car seat.
Always Buckle up, most accidents happen close to home and even low speed accidents can cause major injuries.
It looks like an awesome seat!
The safety tips are a good read
Don’t skip the booster!
Reading the manual is so important. I read mine cover to cover several times and still missed important information.
Read the manual and Rear-facing for as long as possible to ensure your child is safe in case of a collision
When harnessing a child you should not be able to pinch the harness strap at the collar bone.
All of the Diono 10 Car Safety Tips are extremely important, here’s #2:
2. Harnessing 101: Is your child properly harnessed? Whether rear-facing or forward-facing, the chest clip on your child’s harness should always be placed at armpit level. This ensures the harness stays on the child’s shoulders for maximum safety. The 5-point harness should fit snug and comfortable. You should not be able to pinch the harness strap at the collar bone.
Read that manual folks, everything you need to know is in there. Following the specific instructions for your car seat could mean the difference between life and death of your child in the event of a crash…its very important!
Proper belt path! More people need to be on top of this!
Reading the manual is always the best thing to do but I also like tip two. Always check the harness and do the pinch test.
read the manual
I have one of these for my middle child, and could use one for my youngest.
I like tip #9 about choosing the seatbelt or latch, particularly the part about checking whether or not your child has surpassed the weight limit for using the latch. We installed our car seat so long ago that I’d completely forgotten about there being a weight limit for the latch system, so it is a very timely reminder for me to check – I am pretty sure our child is at or near the limit now!
The best tip they gave is Read The Manual.
Tip #4 was a great reminder for me: Re-check the harness slot! I don’t remember the last time I checked this and my 5 year old has grown quite a bit taller in the past year. I will be checking this weekend for sure!
One that I have overlooked in the past was the re checking the harness slot.
I liked this tip 5. Don’t skip the booster: So important to make sure the belt fits using a booster
To always read the manual first to make sure to install it properly I saw on the news here that many people instal the car seats wrong and then the seats will not work right.
I liked the information about the pinch test.

I found the very first point is exactly what you should begin with. Read the manual: You should always read both the car seat manual AND your vehicle manual, as both contain vital information about installation, seat belt function, seating positions and safety warnings. Store your manuals in a safe spot (like your glove box or storage compartment) so you can reference them later as your child grows.
