Oh yes, friends, it happened. The classic plastic lid melted on top of the dishwasher heating coil. It happened last Friday night as I was relaxing, reading a book and enjoying the quiet time.
I wasn’t on the couch for too long, as the burnt plastic smell engulfed our kitchen and upon opening our brand new dishwasher I found the culprit. Yes, brand new dishwasher, like less than two-months-old dishwasher.
Enter a full-on panicked state…
It is hard to see here, but the coil had chunks of green melted plastic all over.
So then, I grabbed my phone and asked my trusted friend Mr. Google. The first post that came up talked about waiting for it to cool down, then putting an ice bag on top of it for 30 min and then peeling it off quickly. So that I did, ice bag on top of the coil for 30 minutes.
Half-an-hour later and the plastic was still fused on top of the coil, not coming off when trying to scrape it with a wooden spoon. Big fail!
If cooling it did nothing, heating it was undoubtedly going to work, right? So I run upstairs, grabbed my hairdryer and yes, it worked, I managed to get it off! I wish I would have skipped the icing part…
So here, if this happened to you too, don’t panic, it’s not too hard to remove it.
What you need:
- Hairdryer.
- Wooden Skewer stick or craft/ice cream wooden stick (you may have to cut it in half depending on where the plastic is, for easy access).
- Wet dishcloth/rag
Here’s what to do:
- First, turn off the dishwasher, grab a set of metal thongs and remove the piece of plastic.
- Open all your windows because the smell is horrendous!
- Unplug the dishwasher and wait for the heating coils to cool down completely, you don’t want to put half your body inside there when it’s super hot. While you wait, remove all the dishes and cutlery from the dishwasher.
- Use the hairdryer to heat the melted plastic, it took less than a minute for me, then with the wooden stick carefully scrape it off. Make sure you pick up and throw away any pieces of plastic that fall at the bottom of the dishwasher. Do this, as many times as needed.
- After you have removed all the visible plastic, use the wet cloth to scrub the coil and clean any remaining plastic.
- Run a quick cycle with the heating dry function with the dishwasher empty. You may notice it smells a tiny bit but any remaining plastic should burn off at that point.
- You are DONE! Pat yourself on the back!
Did I learn my lesson here? Yes, never put tiny lids inside the dishwasher and be extra careful to check everything before it goes on. The positive is that I know what to do if it happens again and my dishwasher isn’t ruined.
Has this happened to you before? What method has worked best for you?

Good tips to defuse such a night mare! yikes
What an ordeal! Google is amazing for anything…
gotta love a dyson
My husband would love this story – he hates that we always jump to, and immediately trust everything we read on, Google! Good on you for coming up with your own fix.
Ugh – happened to us last year. Except we couldn’t tell where the smell was coming from and ended up with the Fire Department paying a visit!
Glad you were able to save your new dishwasher!!! This has never happened to me but I would be panicking too!
That would have been scary!! Thank you for sharing with us. I often worry about softer plastics melting in the dishwasher.
ok so this is good to know because even though i have not done this yet I can see my self doing this at some point. at least i know what i need to fix this mess if it happens. thanks for sharing. live and learn lol
Thank you for sharing. I can see how that can happen easily.
Wow who knew! Thanks for this tip! Never know when one may need to know this
Wow!!! Such a great lesson. My kids always throw Tupperware lids on the top rack… I’m putting an end to that!! Thanks for the great cleaning tip… I never would have thought of a hair dryer. Brilliant! Just in case 😜
Thanks I certainly appreciate this post !
You came up with a fix in spite of googles suggestion. Google is great for ideas and finding answers but its the sorting through the chaff to find the wheat, that takes time that we don’t always have. The ice can if effective but only if the plastic hasn’t begun to run. How often are we that lucky. The old stove I had before the glass top has seen its share of plastic disasters. I am so glad your dishwasher was saved. Thank you for sharing maybe one day I will have a dishwasher and this will info come in handy lol.
I don’t have a dishwasher so that will never happen to me, but thank goodness you were able to remove the plastic!
Good tip – it hasn’t happened yet but it is only a matter of time.
Great to know you never know when you will need this information. Had to deal with a dryer cover in gum! Run the dryer to soften gum. Now I had so much gum I couldn’t repeat as it eventually started cooking gum but did that a few times for 3-5 minutes. Using a Bounce Sheet wrap around a wet magic eraser, I also use Lysol whips. Wet bounce sheet. It got all the gum out.
I would have heated up the dishwasher again, thank goodness for Google.
Thank you for sharing this. Last week I actually had to remove plastic off of a pan so I can definitely relate. I’m glad you were able to safe your dishwasher.
Always glad to hear tips like this, you never know when it will happen to yourself. I love your hairdryer too. 🙂
This is good to know in case it happens. I tend not to use the heat dry setting so I would hopefully avoid this.
I never use the heat dry on my dishwasher, I find the heat of washing on the Sani cycle is enough to also dry them.
Thank you so much, this worked perfectly
This is great to know as this makes a big mess.
Thank you for this! Sadly, I didn’t notice until the washer was already full of new dirty dishes! Awesome!
Thanks for posting this!! We woke up this morning to discover a reusable bottle cap melted to the heating element in our 1-month-old dishwasher and were certainly in a panic. Your hairdryer suggestion worked perfectly and now we can enjoy our Halloween 🙂
So happy to hear!
Hi Angela! I’ll try this – funny enough the exact same lid as you melted in my coil 🙁
It is just the worse size, eh?
Thank you as this happened to me the other day.
The handle of a spatula i burned right into the coil. The hairdryer did not work for me.
Sorry to hear that! Did you end up fixing it? What did you do to get rid of it?
i want to know what you did. the same thing happened to me and I still have not found a solution.
My daughter melted a lid in her dishwasher! Your advice worked perfectly!! Thank you!!
Glad to hear it helped you fix it!
Thank you! Just did this last night and your post is going to save me from hiring someone to get it off 🙂
Hope it worked out!
Thank you!! I had a rubber scraper fall and melt to mine!! Hair dryer worked like a charm! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Glad to hear that!!!
Thanks to the suggestion to use a hair dryer to soften the plastic. I tried the hair dryer but it did not work to remove our melted potato peeler that had a very melted plastic handle. Fortunately I have an electric heat gun (Wagner Power Stripper) that is used to remove paint and gets a lot hotter than a hair dryer. This worked in about 60 seconds and I was able to free the melted potato peeler and clean off the dishwasher heater coil.😀 We now vow to check the bottom of the dishwasher and also to run it only during the day when we might have noticed some problem.
Glad to hear it worked out at the end! And yes, running those at night while you sleep is a big no no!
Thank you! Like you, I found the ice remedy first too, total fail. The hair dryer was the way to go!
Yup! That’s what worked for me 🙂
Wow – same city (Vancouverites unite!) and same plastic crisis 😒. My plastic-ey demon, though, was the handle on a favorite steak knife. Sneaky devil of a blade made its way off the top rack (after lulling me into complacency for years), and was glommed good and proper onto/into the heating element. I freaked out: my husband didn’t. Like you, Angela, he was smart, and found the solution. Luckily, the ice was skipped and it was straight to the hair blow-dryer, followed by a scrub with a mildly abrasive kitchen sponge.
Fingers crossed the normal wash I’m about to run with vinegar only helps get rid of the scorched petroleum stink 🤞.
So glad you skipped the ice. That didn’t do anything for me! hahah and I find vinegar does help getting rid of the awful smell!
Thanks so much for this post! I opened the dishwasher to empty the dishes, but left the room to do something else and came back to the burnt plastic smell. After airing the room I went to Google and found your post (as well as some others suggesting harsh solutions like acetone). Hair dryer and kabob stick worked like a charm! Thanks for saving the day!
Yay! Glad to hear it worked for you as well.
Thank you sooooo much!! Had one of those tiny lids burning in there! I swear I smelled plastic burning for like 3 days, at certain times of the day. Everyone said it was the candle. I said my candle does not smell like burning plastic. Then I open the dishwasher and smell it! I knew it!! Pulled out tiny lid….but it melted in the heating element!! What to do?!! I Google and find a few article…. yours seemed to be the easiest. So I whip out the hair dryer and got to work! 10 minutes later all 3 prongs…cleared of melted plastic off all of them! Thank YOU SO much!!!
LOVE reading comments like this one! So happy my post was able to help!
This just happened to me! This worked like a charm! So easy!
Thank you for sharing!
Fortunately I haven’t had melted plastic stick to my dishwasher coils. But thanks for the information so I know what to do when it inevitably does happen.
I’m really glad that I found this post! I was just looking at another way as I was hesitant about using the nail polish remover lol I just took the bag of ice off that I was going to leave on there I think I’ll get the blow dryer out and a kebab stick my question is, we had run our dishwasher so obviously I’m going to re-wash all the dishes by hand for now do you think soap and water is good? Maybe I should use soap water and vinegar just answered my own question … it doesn’t seem like the smells stays on the plates after I rinse them but our yeti lids and coffee cup let seem to have a stench still… i’m hoping this works the smell is terrible!!! I put a mask on last night when I open the dishwasher to air it out my husband said I was being kind of crazy lol but it’s probably not a good thing to inhale!
A water bottle lid slipped down and was burnt around the heater coil. I cut off the connection from bottle, then used your advice, inn15 minutes I had it melted with a hairdryer and was able to pry it off.
Great idea, works great
Thank you
Glad to hear it helped 🙂
This actually worked!!! We had a plastic measuring scoop melt. Hair dryer did the trick! THANK YOU!
Thanks!! The hairdryer worked perfectly!
Word to the wise, don’t put plastic straws for water bottles on the top shelf even in bakset holders.
Waking up at 4 am to the smell of burning plastic is not fun! 😳
