I can’t believe it is almost the end of July already! Summer break is going by fast for us, we have been spending lots of times outdoors and also going through lots of books.
Today, I am sharing our monthly book picks from DK Canada, all great summertime reads for the boys. This month I let both boys pick which books they wanted to get and here are their selections. Our 5-year-old chose a dino book: Where on Earth? Dinosaurs and a book all about bacteria: The Bacteria Book. Our 8-year-old chose One Million Things, a Visual Encyclopedia, Knowledge Genius!, and Science Is Magic.
You can read more about each of their picks below.
Journey back in time and find out where the dinosaurs roamed. This unique children’s atlas explores each continent, revealing fossil sites and stories on every map.
Part of the best-selling What’s Where on Earth series, this atlas is packed with maps of early Earth and more than 50 profiles of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Stare down a T. Rex in North America. Watch out for the Velociraptors’ slashing claws in the Gobi Desert. Trek across the Siberian tundra and discover a woolly mammoth. This stunning book makes every animal come to life using breathtaking computer-generated imagery.
In this funny, fact-packed science book for kids, readers will discover the bacteria, viruses, and other germs and microbes that keep our bodies and our world running.
Meet a glowing squid, travelling fungus spores, and much more in this dynamic and engaging book all about bacteria, viruses, and other germs and microbes. The Bacteria Book walks the line between “ew, gross!” and “oh, cool!,” exploring why we need bacteria and introducing readers to its microbial mates–viruses, fungi, algae, archaea, and protozoa.
No two pages look alike in this eye-popping children’s encyclopedia. Exploring everything from amazing animals to art, this book is packed with fun facts for kids.
With its unique visual approach, One Million Things! shows you a range of topics but presents them with a twist. Mingle with a bunch of snakes… on a ladder! Meet your mammal relatives in a photo album, or peek into a drawer full of prosthetic eyes to discover the science of genetics. An ice sculpture reveals the science behind states of matter, architectural marvels are displayed on a house of cards, and the story of space exploration is told through an astronaut’s stamp collection.
A brilliant book that puts your general knowledge to the test: pick your subject, look at the pictures, and see if you can name them all.
Children won’t be able to resist the Knowledge Genius brain-busting challenge. For every topic, pages are packed with eye-popping pictures–but do you know what they show? To help you, “Name Game” panels list what you’re looking for. With three levels of difficulty, the challenge gets harder as you work your way from Starter, to Challenger, and finally the truly tricky Genius category. If you need it, there’s a fun fact with every picture to give a helpful clue.
Discover the astounding science behind illusions and magic tricks in this book for kids ages 7-9.
Join comedian and author Steve Mould to find out the scientific secrets behind amazing magic tricks. Learn how to bend water with a balloon, how to create ghosts with mirrors, and how to turn water into juice! Packed with optical illusions, pranks, and fun facts, this book is a must-have for any aspiring scientist or magician. (And the two aren’t as different as you might think!)
Available on Amazon
Our thoughts: If your child is into magic, which our 8-year-old is really into right now, then this is the book to check out. Filled with lots of cool magic tricks and illusions for them to try. Some great pranks as well.
