This week has been dark, rainy, and cold. Winter is definitely coming, and we have many months of gloomy weather ahead. I do not love the short days, so I have been doing some things to help brighten my home.
Is the darkness bringing you down too? Here are some tips to help you make your home bright and happy during the cold months. Some small things can make a big difference.
1. WINDOWS
Since you are not keeping your windows open during the cold months, remove all your window screens, to allow for some extra light to stream into your home. We have retractable screens, and I love that they don’t block our light in the cold months. Try cleaning your windows as well. You will notice the difference right away after a good glass cleaning. Finally, keep the blinds up, and open all your curtains during the day, to take advantage of any light coming through.
2. DECOR
Bright, colourful artwork will help brighten things up in the winter, choose some fun, vibrant colours. You can also get some bright, fun pillows, and/or some cozy throws or blankets. For pillows and throws, you can opt for white, cream, colours. Remember less is more though, so you can add a couple of things and still see a big difference.
3. LIGHT BULBS
What kind of light bulbs do you use in your home? Warm or cool? Upgrade to warm light LED bulbs if you are looking for a cozy feel. Warm LED bulbs will make your home feel brighter, and they are also energy efficient.
4. DECLUTTER
Messy rooms and messy areas, in general, don’t help when you are hoping to make your home look brighter. Start decluttering one small area at a time, each day, until you get to all areas that need decluttering. Having a clean, mess-free home helps so much!
5. PLANTS
Plants help brighten up any room. Get some indoor plants that don’t require a lot of sunlight. They are beautiful, and they’ll help give life to your indoor spaces this winter. I am definitively looking for some new plants to add to our home. You can also get a Herb Window Garden to keep on your kitchen’s windowsill. They look amazing, and it is super convenient having herbs at your fingertips when cooking.
