Here are some easy tips to stay cool and safe in the sun this summer, inspired by Disney’s “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” in theaters Aug 15th!
- Always wear a hat when out in the sun – it lowers your chance of sunstroke and prevents you from getting a painful sunburn on your scalp!
- Stay hydrated – make sure you’re getting enough water!
- Stay in the shade – while working on your tan may sound fun, it’s a quick way to overheat and get sunburned. Opt to sit in the shade when lounging at the beach or park.
- Wear breathable fabrics – as the weather gets warmer, it’s important to let your skin breathe in order to stay as cool as possible. Natural fabrics like cotton, linen and silk are best for beating the heat. Stay away from synthetics like polyester and nylon.
- Use sunscreen – it’s absolutely imperative to use sunscreen during the warmer months, and not only when you go to the beach! Make sure to apply sunscreen to your face and exposed skin every morning before you leave so you don’t get sunburned.
In theaters August 15th, 2012! Don’t miss it!

Good to know. Thanks for the tips!
No problem 🙂
Now that I have 2 little kids I have to remember these tips for 3 people:)
August 1-Always wear a hat in the summer. –For years I did not do this .Now I would not go outside in the heat for more than a minute or so without a hat. It does make a great deal of difference and can mean the difference between comfort and feeling ill or worse.-el03ro
Auguar 2-: Stay hydrated-make sure you’;re geting enough water.”-I probably spend more time tending to my flowers than anything else in the summer. I wear a hat and sunscreen and notice that when I come in, after about a half hour or hour, I will perspire for another hour. I know that I have to replace this water in my body so I drink several glasses of water over the next few hours. Otherwise, I will feel ill. I don’t know if I was always this careful to get hydrated in the early years but I certainly realize it now. Thank you for reminding us of this fact -our bodies need water.-el03ro
No problem Elva 🙂
Thanks for the reminder tips. I always seem to forget to stay protected.
You’re welcome Jenessa 🙂

I thank you for the tips – I tried to remember them all this past summer!
All very obvious! Also… SWIM AS MUCH AS YOU CAN!! This saved me this hot summer we had this year in Newfoundland!
Excellent tips- it’s easy to forget in the fun of it all but super important. I only wish I had a less toxic substitute for sunscreen. 🙂
Thanks for the tips. Honestly, I never really thought about the fabrics I wear when I’m out in the sun- it makes sense to avoid synthetics. I’ll be doing that from now on!
Sunscreen truly helps and is so important. I can tell a difference with my skin when I have it on or I don’t. You can literally feel your skin just sizzling if you don’t have any on. Great tips!
Those are really good tips. It’s easy to forget how important this stuff is.
Printing these up and posting them BY THE DOOR!!! Because as Kaitlin M. said its really easy to forget… especially when you’re just eager to get outside once the weather gets warmer.
Hello, OSM. These are all great reminders. I am prone to sunstroke and did not know wearing a hat will help. Also a good reminder is keeping in the shade as you mention but often is not thought about. Informative post. Thank you One Smiley Monkey.
We do all those tips every time w e go outside, but when my son goes out by himself in our back yard, he doesn’t drink enough water, so I try to offer him a Popsicle or juice. Takes everything I have to get him to drink water!
Thanks for this! My daughters are all biracial and insist that they can’t burn; but in fact they can. It was always a fight to get them to wear sunscreen, but, I always won out in the end!
Plenty of water, a hat when I am outside and all my clothes made from cotton, it’s about the only things that are keeping me from overheating in this heat we seem to be having at the moment
Good tips.
Great tips, sometimes people need these helpful reminders!
Always wear a hat in the sun. I think this tip is especially necessary for the very young and the older person. Now that I am a senior, I know I cannot stand the heat as well as when I was a teenager. This is very important for babies and young children and anyone who is very fair-skinned.Thank you for this timely tip. (Summer has to come sometime!)
Keeping cool and hydrated is so important, for children their bodies are smaller and they dehydrate faster
always good to know info!!
Hats, sunscreen and lots of water will help to keep you cool in the summer
Stay hydrated, wear a hat and stay in the shade whenever possible
Thanks for the tips to stay cool…I don’t tolerate the heat very well so I need all the help I can get!
Personally I hate being outside in the heat and sunshine but when I do I have an umbrella that I use for sun protection
I need to print this and put it by my front door, I always am forgetting a hat and sunscreen.
