Do you want to make your own playdough at home? Each batch of this home made playdough can last over four weeks (depending on use) and it is super easy to make! No cooking need it!
What you need:
- 2 cups of flour
- 1 cup of salt
- 2 tblsp of cream of tarter
- 2 cups of boiling water
- 3 tbslp of vegetable oil
- Optional: Food colouring or Koolaid pouch and a drop of essential oil for scent
Instructions:
- Mix all the dry ingredients together
- Pour in the boiling water, oil and colouring (if using) and mix well
- Knead until the flour is mixed in completely
- Add a drop of your favorite essential oil (we love mint)
Extra Tips:
Store your playdough in an airtight container, if the Playdough starts getting too dry add a bit of oil to it and mix well.
Done!!

We already make our own playdough but I will totally add essential oi to it, lovely idea
We love the nice scent! 🙂
Do you have to use vegetable oil? Can it be another kind of oil?
I have never used any other oil before but I read somewhere that you can substitute baby oil for vegetable oil if you want. Let me know if you do try it out 🙂

Thanks for the recipe! It’s perfect for the kids with the cooler weather quickly approaching…. That and the fact that I HATE the smell of real playdoh!
thanks for this recipe. I knew you could do this which is safer for kids because well we all know that theyll eventually want to taste the play doh but couldn’t find the exact recipe to make it. now i’ll be able to make it for my boy 🙂 love it!
This is such a good idea, adding cool aid is even a better idea, not only for the color but for the smell too. I will try to make this for my kids, I am sure they will love it. (although I can foresee the mess that is going to be made lol)
This is so cool! I cannot wait to try it and tell my friends about it!
Feel free to share Sara 🙂

Won’t adding the essential oil and/or kool aid encourage the child to eat it? My daughter always eats regular play dough (and silly putty and crayons) despite its nasty smell and taste.
You can definitively skip the oil/kool aid if you are worried about that.
I never had an issue with my son trying to eat it but I do find that with younger children they may try to eat play-doh, crayons etc. a few times but if you explain it’s not food and it’s for playing they usually stop trying.
Going to try this with my daughter – I bet it smells delicious!
That sounds surprisingly easy, and adding a scent is an interesting idea.
Love this. Thank You
Thanks for this recipe! It will make a great craft for myself and my grandkids to make one rainy weekend!
I would much rather make Playdough than buy it, it’s way cheaper and you know what’s in it when you make it!
How much does this recipe make?
About 4-5 cups
I absolutely love this! What a fun activity to do with my niece when she comes to visit!
Love it !! thank you good to know it’s non toxic!!.. does using kool aid stain things?
Not if you don’t use too much of it 🙂
I have been looking for good easy Playdough recipes as my son will spend hours playing with it. Looking forward to giving this one a try, thanks!!!!
