I usually write child-friendly show reviews and about the shows my children watch on my streaming suggestions posts. Today I am sharing some of the shows I watch after the boys are in bed instead. I love how Netflix has the “Kid” zone for little ones and after they are done watching I can go back to my regular profile to catch up on my favourite series!
And now, without further ado, here’s a list of the top 3 series I am loving right now:
1) Grand Hotel: The Grand Hotel is a Spanish drama television series set in an early 20th century aristocratic hotel, centered on the mysteries that involve the owner family and the hotel servants.
This series has lots of action, mystery and suspense. I would say it is a bit of a mix between Downtown Abbey an Agatha Christie’s Poirot. All 3 seasons of the show are available for streaming on Netflix right now.
(This show is all in Spanish with English subtitles)
2) The Killing: The Killing is an American crime drama television series based on the Danish television series Forbrydelsen (literally The Crime). Set in Seattle, it follows a variety of murder investigations by main characters homicide detectives Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder.
If you enjoy crime and drama this is your show. I am watching the last episodes of season four right now and I have a hard time stopping to go to sleep!
3) Portlandia: Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein are the perfect sketch-comedy duo in this series set in Portland, Oregon. The series pokes fun of the Pacific Northwest laid-back lifestyle and the sketches are gold! So many great characters, fantastic comedy and a perfect wait to end the day and relax.

I recently got Netflix and Forbrydelsen sounds like a good series to watch. I used to live in Denmark so it is especially interesting for me. I do remember that any foreign films were always shown with the original tone and there were subtitles for the Danes who didn’t understand the language – which are few and far between. Their English for example is superb. I found the subtitles handy in learning Danish.
Good sounding series! There are more and more great original series to watch on Netflix 🙂
We haven’t as yet signed up for Netflix.–maybe in the future. In the meantime I am hooked on reruns of ‘The Mentalist:. It is the only Crime show where you get to laugh and smile during it, due to the antics of Patrick Jane.
I am also watching reruns of ‘Emily of New Moon.’ Based on L.M. Montgomery;s books of the character of the same name, It is absolutely fascinating and a wonderful depiction of life on rural PEI a hundred years ago.
i’ve heard good things about Portlandia
I love historical fiction so I think I will have to go check out Grand Hotel. I am going to love seeing what you are watching.
Love The Killing; great show I started to watch about a year ago. There are so many smaller, not as well known shows on Netflix!
