Our family embarked on a large group, multi-generational trip to RIU Yucatan in Playa del Carmen, and it turned out to be a great choice for travellers of all ages! Everyone, from the kid’s great-grandmother to grandparents, aunts and uncles,  had a memorable experience at this vibrant, all-inclusive resort.

The Resort & Accommodations

The RIU Yucatan is a large resort offering a mix of tropical charm and lively entertainment. We stayed in a double-standard ocean-view room, which was comfortable and conveniently close to other family members. While the décor felt outdated and noise insulation wasn’t the best, the rooms were clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.

One thing to note—this is a large resort, so be prepared for some walking when heading to the beach, pools, or restaurants. Consider this if you have somebody in your group with mobility issues.

Pools & Beach: Perfect for Families

The resort’s pools had some shallow area pools that were perfect for our toddlers. There was plenty of space to swim, play, and relax, making it an excellent choice for families with little ones.

The beach was stunning, with soft sand. The only downside was that finding chairs at the beach and pool could be challenging, as many were reserved early in the day. However, with a bit of patience, we always managed to grab a good spot.

Food & Dining

The buffet was great, with a wide selection of dishes that satisfied everyone in our group.  The beachside drink options were also fantastic, making it easy to grab a drink without leaving the sun and sand behind. We also celebrated a birthday during our trip, the kid’s great grandma’s 90th birthday. We had a special dinner, and they made the celebration special for us, with a cake and a candle, and singing the birthday song for our table. It was a nice experience.

Entertainment & Activities

RIU Yucatan offers a fun and lively atmosphere, with plenty of activities to entertain guests. Some of the highlights we experienced included:
✔️ Lots of activities during the day, at the pools – super fun and energetic activities to keep everyone entertained!
✔️ Nightly shows & live music – a great way to unwind after dinner, our son participated in the night shows for kids and had a great time.
✔️ Howler monkeys and other wildlife in the trees – a unique and exciting touch to the experience.

The resort is also conveniently located near Playa del Carmen’s town center, making exploring shopping, restaurants, bars, and the famous Coco Bongo’s nightclub easy.

Despite minor downsides like outdated decor and some noise issues, RIU Yucatan proved to be a family-friendly resort. The friendly staff, great food, beautiful beach, and fun activities made this a memorable vacation for every generation in our group.

RIU Yucatan is a solid choice for families looking for a fun, all-inclusive getaway in Playa del Carmen, looking for a more budget-friendly vacation option.
